POLITICO Journalism Institute Opens Internship Applications for 2023 Session

POLITICO is accepting applications for the 2023 session of the POLITICO Journalism Institute (PJI), an intensive training program designed to advance newsroom diversity. Their eighth year of this program will be from May 30, 2023 – June 9, 2023. 

12 undergraduate, graduate, or recent graduates will be selected to participate in a competitive 10-day program that offers hands-on training for those interested in sharpening their skills while covering politics and policy. This in-person opportunity will allow participants to have their work published by POLITICO, engage in interactive sessions, panels with industry leaders, and mentor pairings with POLITICO journalists. 

Selected applicants will split their time between American University in Washington, D.C., and POLITICO headquarters in Arlington, Va. All costs for attending PJI, including room, board, and transportation, are covered by POLITICO. 

Please include the following with your application:

  • A cover letter addressed to the ‘Selection Committee’ telling why you think you should be chosen.
  • A one-page resume
  • Links to PDFs for three samples of your best journalistic work.
  • One letter of recommendation. Please attach a signed letter (on letterhead) from your reference, as a PDF. Your reference can also directly email the letter of reference to
  • A PDF with a one- or two-paragraph pitch using the prompt below. This exercise allows you to demonstrate your skills in pitching a story idea to an editor:

Juniors or seniors will be given preference.
