Hunter Journalism students who are interested in reporting internationally this year can apply for the Pulitzer Center Student Reporting Fellowship. The deadline has been extended to March 3rd, 2023.
Every year, a Hunter College student wins a $3,000 grant to fund their chosen international reporting. Previous fellows have reported on topics such as women and gender, the environment, human rights, immigration and social justice.
Hunter’s journalism program director Sissel McCarthy explains, “they are looking for a spotlight on a story that isn’t being told in American media.”
The chosen fellow will work with a professional journalist serving as their mentor through the program and their work will be published on the Pulitzer website. The fellowship will also help its winner find other media outlets to publish where their research would be a good fit.
The fellowship includes an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. in the fall for an opportunity to meet with other Pulitzer fellows.
Last year’s fellow, Niamh McAuliffe, reported in Ireland to investigate how breweries are converting waste into biogas, a renewable energy source. She included in her field notes, “My advice to any future Pulitzer Fellows: Trust your instincts. You know more than you think you do.”
The winner will be honored and officially announced on April 18th, 2023 at the Roosevelt House along with a talk from journalists Dominic Smith and Andrew Robinson, who will be speaking on their documentary focusing on underwater kelp and what happens when an entire ecosystem collapses due to climate change.
