Codes and Modes: Reframing Reality, Virtuality and Nonfiction Media

This version of the Codes and Modes Symposium aims to create an intervention into the uncritical excitement about virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and machine learning to establish a space for conversations about long-term socio-cultural and neurobiological impacts. Presenters will discuss how theorists, activists and artists can develop useful frameworks to explore the complex implications of using these technologies. Featured speakers include Lev Manovich (CUNY Graduate Center), Mandy Rose (Co-Director of i-Docs), Daanish Masood (BeAnotherLab), and Lina Srvistava (Fouder of Cultural Innovation for Social Impact) and Dan Archer (Empathetic Media).

The Symposium is sponsored by the Integrated Media Arts MFA Program at Hunter College, the Department of Film and Media Studies at Hunter College and the Emerging Media Technologies Program at NYC College of Technology, the Entertainment Technology Department. The primary locations on the 17th and 18th are the Lang Theater and the Film and Media Television Studio on the 5th floor in the Hunter North building. The evening of the 16th will be in the glass room 3rd floor Hunter West.

IMA alumna Betty Yu’s work on view

Flyer for the ExhibitIMA alumna Betty Yu will be presenting her work: Chinatown Art Brigade Art Exhibit, “Resilience/Resistance”.
Saturday, January 7th from 1-4pm at Pearl River Mart’s Gallery at 395 Broadway, NYC. The show will be up from Jan. 7-22.

Betty helped co-found the Chinatown Art Brigade with Tomie Arai and ManSee Kong last year and it’s exciting that this show will feature the works of 11 members and supporters of the Brigade.

The “Resilience/Resistance: Chinatown Art Brigade” exhibit puts a more diverse human face on gentrification by celebrating resilience and resistance, and by giving local residents a way to tell their own stories of displacement.

IMA alumna Laura Chipley’s work at NY Hall of Science

Art Installation on Climate ChangeIMA alumna Laura Chipley’s collaborative work “Monster in the Closet” is part of ACCESS: ARTIST AND SCIENTIST COLLABORATIONS at the NY Hall of Science. The website also has a video featuring Laura talking about the project.

The project was commissioned by NYSCI as part of the ACCESS project, an initiative that pairs artists with scientists in an effort to make climate research more accessible to museum goers. Laura Chipley worked with Dr. Hannah Zanowski, an oceanographer from Princeton who studies the relationship between the Southern Ocean and climate change.

As part of the project, filmmaker Flora Lichtman documented our artist / scientist collaboration and recorded a series of our conversations about climate change, audience engagement and art.
