Prof. Ricardo Miranda’s project

Prof. Ricardo Miranda is working on a project in Madrid. EXCEDENTES / EXCESS a commission by the El Matadero Art Center in Madrid, Spain revolves around the large amounts of food going to the dump when there are plenty of people hungry in the cities of New York and Madrid. Beyond the issue of hunger and food reclamation, food waste is the largest category of solid waste in US landfills and organic waste contributes to greenhouse gases (methane). The project is also invested in highlighting the technologies (e.g. vision systems in processing facilities, GMOs) that reinforce and produce popular concepts of how edible food should look.

The project is currently in research phase in the Unites States and a cart to re-distribute good food that has been discarded is currently being implemented in Madrid, Spain.

Magazine writing class launches 3rd issue of The Bridge magazine

This semester’s team worked together on the magazine’s newest addition to the “Hunter Spotlight.” With a focus on health at Hunter, The Bridge writer Jesse Convertino wrote a heartfelt story of a Hunter student’s fight with cancer. Read about how a healthy and active 19-year-old sophomore faced cancer after feeling a sharp pain in his knee. After a successful surgery and long treatment of chemotherapy, the student found himself back in the hospital to see a young high school boy with the same condition – and being treated in the same room.

On the arts side of The Bridge, writer Stephanie Hologounis critiques Rihanna’s new controversial music video for her hit single “We Found Love.” The video, which has been slammed by anti-rape groups, presents the intoxicating passion in an abusive relationship surrounded by a significant use of drugs and alcohol.
