Professor Ivone Margulies at Arts Across the Curriculum event

Arts Across the Curriculum event, to be held on Tuesday, September 17 in The Lang Theater. The event comprises a screening of the recent, critically acclaimed film What Maisie Knew (Millenium Entertainment, 2012), followed by a roundtable discussion with directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel, Professor Ivone Margulies of the Department of Film and Media and Professor Richard Kaye of the Department of English.

What Maisie Knew is an adaptation of the 1897 Henry James novel about a young girl caught in an acrimonious custody battle. New York Times critic A.O. Scott called the film “brilliant” and “haunting.” McGehee and Siegel’s major feature films include Uncertainty (2008) with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bee Season (2005) with Richard Gere and Juliette Binoche, and The Deep End (2001) with Tilda Swinton.

Professor Shanti Thakur wins the CINE Golden Eagle Award for film “Red Tulips”

The film “Red Tulips, A Story About Forgetting” written and directed by Shanti Thakur won the CINE Golden Eagle Award. Past winners include Steven Speilberg, Barbara Kopple and Albert Maysles.

“Red Tulips” also won Best Narrative Film at the 60th Columbus International Film Festival and the Grand Remi Award (Best of the Fest Category) for Experimental Film at 46th Worldfest-Houston International Film Festival.

Over a dozen screenings include the 16th Los Angeles International Short Film Festival, 21st St. Louis International Film Festival, New York International Short Film Festival and 39th Athens International Film Festival.

Professor Gustavo Mercado’s feature film, Saturnalia, wins multiple awards during film festival run

Professor Mercado’s feature film, Saturnalia, which was produced with an all student crew from the Department of Film & Media Studies, has won multiple awards during its film festival run this summer:

Columbia Gorge International Film Festival – Special Jury Feature Award
Kingston NY Film Festival – Best Feature Award
Chain NYC Film Festival – Best Cinematography Award
Chain NYC Film Festival – Best Actress Award
Woods Hole Film Festival – Best actress Award
Cincinnati Film Festival – Best Narrative Feature

Saturnalia has also just been announced as an official selection at the prestigious Cincinnati Film Festival, and will screen there later this month.
