
Pulitzer Center grantee Lauren Markham will join Professor Sissel McCarthy on April 23rd from 6-8 PM at The Roosevelt House to discuss the implications of using AI technology for border control.
Markham is a journalist, essayist, and author of several books including The Far Away Brothers, the winner of the 2018 Ridenhour Book Prize. Based in Northern California, Markham has reported on issues that span the globe with a specific focus on immigration, borders, and human rights; her upcoming talk is a part of the larger Pulitzer Center reporting project ‘The Future of The Border.’
This project investigates how machine learning technology is tested at the border and the ramifications of these innovations on human rights and privacy, both now and in the future. Markham is a contributing editor at VQR, and her work has appeared in outlets such as Harper’s, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, Guernica, and more.
