Applications for Pulitzer Fellowship due March 1

The Pulitzer Center is once again seeking applications for its Reporting Fellowship for 2025. One Hunter student will be selected to receive a $3000 stipend to produce a journalistic piece focused on one region in the world. Their piece can be produced as an audio story, a photo essay, a traditional article, or several other mediums and will be published on the Pulitzer Center’s website as well as other news outlets. The deadline this year is March 1.

For several years now, the Pulitzer Center has partnered with Hunter College and other institutions of higher learning to produce pieces in the Center’s areas of interest: climate and the environment, global health, peace and conflict, human rights, gender and racial equity, and information and artificial intelligence. Hunter’s Pulitzer Fellows have written pieces on subjects such as Sweden’s child refugees, the future of Irish energy and, most recently, stormwater management systems in Portland, Oregon.

Applicants must propose a story, with as much focus as possible, and also provide a detailed itinerary and cost projection for their trip. Important information to include is travel dates, locations, costs of any equipment and translation services, food, and accommodation. A small portfolio must also be submitted with the application.

If selected, the student reporter would then work with a journalist mentor assigned by the Pulitzer Center to guide them through the process. After the story is published, the reporter would then attend a weekend meeting in Washington of all of the Pulitzer Center’s fellows to discuss their work.

Students who are interested in applying, or need some guidance with the process, can contact Sissel McCarthy at sissel.mccarthy56@login.cuny.edu. All applications must be submitted no later than Saturday, March 1, 2025.

Questions for the Pulitzer Center can be directed to reportingfellows@pulitzercenter.org.
