As spring registration began in November, the Hunter journalism program held its annual info session in Hunter North. Program Director Sissel McCarthy and other faculty, as well as film and media internship coordinator David Pavlosky, provided students with an overview of their options for the upcoming semester.
For seniors, a compelling option is From Classroom to Career, new class taught by Professor Jeannie Ahn that focuses on developing interview skills, building resumes, and other tips and tricks to help students land a job following graduation. From mock interviews to simulations, the class helps each student evaluate their readiness and career goals.
For those interested in interviewing A-List celebrities or working red carpets, consider Entertainment Journalism. New to Hunter, Professor Lambeth Hochwald will be instructing this course. She’s interviewed celebrities like Harry Connick Jr. and the cast of Saturday Night Live. The course will focus on immersive profiles, teach students to shoot paparazzi-style photos, and conduct interviews.
One of the afternoon’s highlights was Urban Health and Environmental Reporting, taught by Professor Glenn. This advanced course delves into the intersection of urban health and environmentalism, and applies the various reporting techniques journalism students have learned in previous courses.
For student journalists with an eye on social issues, an investigative journalism course will be offered on Tuesdays by Professor David Alm. Investigative Journalism is often revolutionary, and this course is designed to teach students how to produce thorough, well-researched, and engaging stories on topics of consequence.
Students also got to hear from internship coordinator David Pavlosky and Hunter alum Sima Sadykov (’23), who has thrived as a freelance film producer in her short time out of Hunter. Both gave advice on how to look for internships and the expectations of a real newsroom.
Spring registration is open until January 31st, 2024. Students are urged to take advantage of these courses and reach out to professors with any questions they may have..
