This program looks at rarely explored cultural traditions in Latin America. Features With a Stroke of the Chaveta (2007) Directed by Pam Sporn. USA/Cuba. This documentary reveals the tradition of lectores, or readers, which was an integral part of the world of Cuban cigar makers from the 1800s to the early 1900s. In Spanish with English subtitles. Shown with Solidarity in Saya: An Afro-Bolivian Music Movement (2009) Directed by Maya Jensen. Bolivia. Through music and very revealing interviews with Afro-Bolivian economist Juan Angola Maconde and others, this documentary explores the little known Afro-Bolivian population. Katherine Behar is an interdisciplinary artist based in New York City. Her
installations, performances, and videos mix high and low technologies to portray
the condition of living sensuously in digital media. Katherine has participated
in shows at art centers such as Chicago Cultural Center, De Balie Centre for
Culture and Politics in Amsterdam, and The National Museum of Art in
Cluj-Napoca; at festivals including CamouFlash in Dresden, the Mediations
Biennale in Poznan, the Digital Live Art Festival in Leeds, PostsovkhoZ 6 in
Mooste, Estonia, and PSi, Conflux, and the D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge
Festival, all in New York; and at galleries including Maryland Art Place in
Baltimore, Interval in Manchester, CANADA in New York, and the Dorsch Gallery in
Miami, among others. In addition to making her own work, Katherine is part of
two long-term collaborations, the performance art group Disorientalism with
Marianne M. Kim, and RSI, an art and technology team with Ben Chang and Silvia Ruzanka. Katherine teaches Digital Art at Pace University.
