Filming on Campus

Journalism and Documentary filming is considered separate from fiction filmmaking and can proceed as long as people use common sense and respect public safety and do not film in areas that are off limits to everybody (list of off limit locations is below). Students should carry the “press” cards handed out by the department.

For narrative (fiction) projects, students filming small in-class exercises follow the same procedure as journalism and documentary. For longer, scripted projects, students bring a letter from their instructor or department (on Department letterhead) that goes to Student Affairs (Hunter East 1103) with the script attached. The script is not for approval purposes – it is so administration will be aware that filming is taking place. Once Student Affairs signs the form indicating that they are aware of the intended filming, the student will be notified. The student will then take the form to Public Safety. Again, this is not for approval, but to ensure that public safety is aware filming is taking place and can accommodate the production if necessary.  Students should have the signed form with them when they are shooting.
