Chelsea Narvaez wins Emmy

Hunter College journalism alumna student Chelsea Narvaez has won an Emmy for her work on the CBS News primetime documentary, 39 Days.

Narvaez was a production assistant on the weekly news program 48 Hours on the day a former Marjory Stoneman Douglas student shot and killed 17 people in Parkland, Florida.  As the story unfolded, the 48 Hours team and other CBS journalists decided to profile the students who banded together to do something, chronicling a movement that culminated in the nationwide March for our Lives 39 days later.

Narvaez said they worked around the clock on the documentary. “I’m truly in awe of what we managed to put together in such a short amount of time.,” Narvaez said. “When it aired, we cried, feeling the weight of the awful tragedy that occurred, wishing we never had to make this documentary but feeling pride in telling the victims’ stories and the stories of their friends and family as best we could.”

In addition to the Emmy for Outstanding News Special, 39 Days received an Edward R. Murrow award for Best News Documentary in June. Way to go Chelsea!
