Rules and Procedures for Filming on Campus

Journalism and Documentary students do not need permission to film on campus. They should carry press passes with them (available from Peter Jackson’s office, 435HN). Students should be courteous and respect public safety and other staff.

Students may not film in these locations: cafeteria kitchen, boiler rooms, pool, dorms, labs, roof.

Filming in the library needs approval of the director of the library.

For narrative (fiction) projects, students filming small in-class exercises follow the same procedure as journalism and documentary. For projects that will require equipment setup, lights, etc., students should bring a letter from their instructor or department (on Department letterhead) that goes to Student Affairs (Hunter East 1103) with the script attached. The script is not for approval purposes – it is so administration will be aware that filming is taking place. Once Student Affairs signs the form indicating that they are aware of the intended filming, the student will be notified. Please try to give them enough notice (they ask for 2 weeks but will try and turn things around more quickly).

The student will then take the form to Public Safety. Again, this is not for approval, but to ensure that public safety is aware filming is taking place and can accommodate the production if necessary. Students should have the signed form with them when they are shooting.
