The Center for Puerto Rican Studies (Centro) and the Aronson Awards for Social Justice Journalism in the Department of Film and Media Studies have launched the Blanca Vázquez Erazo Social Justice Scholarship Award ($1,500). It will be awarded to a Hunter College student who best exemplifies Blanca’s unwavering commitment to social justice, peace, and freedom.

Must be enrolled in Hunter College by the time of the award (Fall term). Open to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors.
For more than fifteen years, Blanca Vázquez taught in the Department of Film and Media Studies at Hunter College, inspiring and mentoring students to engage critically with social issues. She also co-directed the Aronson Awards for Social Justice Journalism and was a longtime leader of the Professional Staff Congress, the union representing CUNY faculty and staff,. Blanca was a strong advocate for adjunct faculty and worked tirelessly to advance equity throughout the university.
Throughout her life, Blanca remained deeply committed to Puerto Rican independence, anti-racism, international solidarity, and the pursuit of social justice, peace, and freedom. This scholarship honors her legacy by recognizing a Hunter College student who best exemplifies Blanca’s unwavering commitment to these values.
The Aronson Awards for Social Justice Journalism will take place on November 11 in the Faculty Dining Hall.
