It is with sorrow we post here the news of Chantal Akerman’s passing. In 2012 Akerman visited Hunter College for a Master class and a discussion around La Captive, and her fierce directness as well as her films deeply marked our students as it has over the years many filmmakers–Gus Van Sant, Apichatpong Weerasathakul, Claire Denis and many others– who saw it also before they became filmmakers. Her films–documentary fiction comedies and trageides left a deep imprint, as she pushed you to sense time and the everyday differently. What else can we ask from an artist? She will be missed.
