Prof. Sissel McCarthy hosts the 2025 Foreign Press Awards

Professor Sissel McCarthy hosted the 2025 Foreign Press Awards at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The annual awards ceremony celebrates the achievements of international correspondents working across the United States.

In her remarks, Professor McCarthy explained that the Foreign Press Awards honor journalists for their courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the truth. She also acknowledged the difficult conditions many journalists face for simply doing their jobs. “The pressure on all journalists right now is immense. But we see you,” McCarthy said. “Your work matters.”

This year, the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents honored NBC’s Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell in recognition of her lifetime contribution to international journalism.

Prizes of Excellence were also given to CNN’s Jim Sciutto, CBS News White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang, and four other top foreign correspondents.

The AFPC also awarded three scholarships to foreign reporters studying in the US to help fund their master’s degrees in journalism. “All of you here tonight help empower our international press corps and its mission during these challenging times,” said McCarthy.
