F&M alumna Veralyn Williams honored at Miscast Gala

Film & Media alumna Veralyn Williams received an award at the MCC Theater’s annual Miscast Gala on Monday, April 4th. Williams, along with Dominique Thorne, were honored with the 2016 Youth Company Alumni Awards. Williams is an alumna of the Youth Company, a program for high school students that teaches writing and acting that is held in the MCC Theater. The award highlights Youth Company alumni that have sprouted successful careers after learning at the program.

The Miscast Gala, which hosted the ceremony, is a night of ceremony and performance featuring Broadway actors performing portions of theatrical productions that they wouldn’t normally perform. The event took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

FM alum Jayan Cherian screening at ADIFF in NYC

Film and Media alum Jayan K Cherian will be screening his film, Papilio Buddha at the 21st African Diaspora International Film Festival in New York City. Papilio Buddha features a group of displaced untouchables in Western Ghats of India whom embrace Buddhism in order to escape from caste oppression. The film explores the new identity-political uprising based on Ambedkarism, in the milieu of an on going land struggle. The film was originally banned in India, but it will be playing at the film festival on Friday December 6 at 7:30 PM.

Professor Gustavo Mercado’s feature film, Saturnalia, wins multiple awards during film festival run

Professor Mercado’s feature film, Saturnalia, which was produced with an all student crew from the Department of Film & Media Studies, has won multiple awards during its film festival run this summer:

Columbia Gorge International Film Festival – Special Jury Feature Award
Kingston NY Film Festival – Best Feature Award
Chain NYC Film Festival – Best Cinematography Award
Chain NYC Film Festival – Best Actress Award
Woods Hole Film Festival – Best actress Award
Cincinnati Film Festival – Best Narrative Feature

Saturnalia has also just been announced as an official selection at the prestigious Cincinnati Film Festival, and will screen there later this month.
