COLD SHUTDOWN: FUKUSHIMA ONE YEAR AFTER by Martin Lucas
When a group of older women from the fallout-covered region of Fukushima occupy the grounds of the Ministry of Trade in Tokyo, they become the
spearhead of a new kind of national anti-nuclear movement. Faced with a government urging them to stay put and live surrounded by radioactivity, ordinarily calm Japanese citizens must take matters into their own hands. Cold Shutdown is a half-hour visit with parents, teachers, and local activists of Fukushima Prefecture as they struggle to protect the lives of their children and themselves, setting up radiation testing sites, and children’s health and food distribution centers and creating alternative information networks to counter government policies.
