We’re looking for 3–5 Film & Media students interested in animation, motion graphics, projection design, video art, or visual storytelling to participate in a unique multidisciplinary theater production happening during the Fall 2026 semester.
This collaborative production brings together students and faculty from Hunter’s:
- Film & Media Department
- Theatre Department
- Japanese Studies Department
The production, Akaoni (Red Demon), is inspired by Japanese folklore and will combine live theater performance with original animation/video design elements created by student collaborators.
Students selected will work closely with Prof. Poyen Wang, as well as faculty and students across departments to help develop the production. There is a lot of creative freedom, and the animation/video work will evolve throughout the semester as the show develops.

Important Commitment Details: This is a semester-long commitment, and students must be able to fully commit to the entire production schedule, including rehearsals and performances.
Required Friday Class Meetings (Fall Semester): Fridays, 2:30 PM – 5:15 PM
Required Tech/Dress Rehearsals:
- Mon, Nov. 23 — 5:30 PM – 9:30 PM
- Tues, Nov. 24 — 6:15 PM – 9:30 PM
- Mon, Nov. 30 — 5:30 PM – 9:30 PM
- Tues, Dec. 1 — 6:15 PM – 9:30 PM
- Wed, Dec. 2 — Dress Rehearsal, 5:30 PM – 9:30 PM
Required Performances:
- Thurs, Dec. 3 — 7 PM
- Fri, Dec. 4 — Student Matinee (time TBD)
- Fri, Dec. 4 — 7 PM
- Sat, Dec. 5 — 2 PM
This opportunity is best for students who:
- Enjoy collaborative creative work
- Have experience or interest in animation, motion graphics, projection/video design, editing, or digital storytelling
- Want hands-on production experience outside of traditional classroom projects
- Can commit responsibly to deadlines, rehearsals, and performances
Qualifications:
Students should have a basic knowledge of Adobe After Effects and/or 3D animation techniques. To be considered, please include 2–3 links to samples of your 2D or 3D animation work in the interest form below. Applicants must be actively enrolled at Hunter College during Fall 2026.
