Rooted in the City is a transformative 10-month paid internship for high school and college-aged youth across New York City’s five boroughs. Designed to reconnect participants with urban ecosystems, the program blends ecological fieldwork, cultural storytelling, and creative expression. Interns gain hands-on experience in plant and tree identification, urban soil and fungi studies, and learn to recognize edible and medicinal plants while tracking ecological changes across the seasons.

Through a combination of scientific inquiry, civic engagement, and the arts, students deepen their understanding of land stewardship in a city context. The program culminates in a youth-led public event, “Moving Through our Senses with the Plant World,” showcasing their growth and discoveries.

This Internship offers a unique opportunity to build ecological literacy, artistic community engagement experience, and contribute meaningfully to regenerative work in NYC’s public landscapes.

Here is our website link for the Rooted in the City Internship and application.

Also attached to this email is a flyer if you wish to print to put up in your department.

Deadline to apply is June 27th.

We would be grateful if you could share this opportunity with your students or let us know the best way to connect further. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions!

With gratitude,
Lauren Wigo
