Media, Sports and Society- MEDIA 374 – Spring 2026
2 classes: Mon, Wed. 4:00 – 5:15, 6:00 – 7:15pm
This course examines the relationship between the media and sports and the role of sports in society. This will involve tracing the history of spectator sports; the 19th century growth in the popularity of sports and print coverage of sports; the arrival of radio sports broadcasting in the 1920’s; the dramatic growth of the television-sports-advertising complex from the 1960s to the 1990s, and the impact of the internet on the media-sports industry.
The course will consider the business operations of the TV sports industry and analyze the production of a TV sports program. The above subjects will provide a foundation from which to examine various social issues about sports- sports and race in American society; women and sports; sports and male culture; and sports and national identity. Major and minor American spectator sports will be considered in addition to sports popular in other countries and the Olympic Games.
The course counts as an Analytical course in the Media Studies Major.
