LES community arts organization announcing internship opportunities in 2024-2025
– Internship: Arts-in-Translation Intern
Founded by working artists in 2003 Mencius Society for the Arts is a community-based organization currently headquartered on the Lower East Side in New York City. Named in honor of the Chinese philosopher Mengzi (or ‘Mencius’) who believed in learning as key to social harmony, MSA is devoted to the advance and transmission of traditional/folk arts and social empowerment through creative communal engagement. The Mencius Arts-in-Translation Internship (Nov 2024-May 2025) offers a 7-month opportunity for performing and media arts students to participate in co-creative a multi-genre stage performance while learning the ins and outs of the day-to-day operation of a community-based arts center.
Eligibility Criteria
· Undergrad or graduate students in music, performing- and media- arts, foreign language studies, translation & interpreting, non-profit arts administration and related fields
· Proficiency in Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, or other major immigrant community language
· Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; familiarity with basic video editing
Scope of Responsibilities
· Maintain multimedia/multilingual documentation of day-to-day arts engagement at MSA
· Organize and file program recordings including data through video/photo recordings, participant-observation notes, and interview with participants.
· Assist with general operation when at the center: set up, opening, providing supplies, break down activity
· Part-take in one public multi-genre stage performance engaging peers and seniors at the Mencius center
Terms & Compensation
· Schedule: Thu or Fr 3:00-6:00 pm, Sa or Su 10:00-2:00 pm or 2:00-6:00 pm
· Total Stipend Up to: $6000
· Renewal/Adjustment: Pending satisfactory completion, adjustable to PT staff position
