GOVERNMENT & PUBLIC POLICY INTERNSHIPS

Office of Council Member Ben Kallos

Ben Kallos is a progressive Democrat who represents the Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island. He is a lawyer, entrepreneur, former Chief of Staff in the Assembly, and former Executive Director of a good government group. Ben is a proponent of affordable housing, women’s rights, high quality and affordable education, and open, transparent government. Spring Intern

Council Member Ben Kallos is accepting applications for spring interns. Interns will be asked to take part in all aspects of running a successful district office.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing assistance, responding to inquiries, and working with government
  • Agencies to resolve problems for constituents.

Summer Intern

Council Member Ben Kallos is accepting applications for interns with an anticipated start date of late May/early June. This is an unpaid internship that offers college students the opportunity to gain direct knowledge of how a city council office functions and see the inner workings that are required to best serve constituents. Summer interns will be supervised directly by an Intern Manager but will receive feedback from other staff members on projects, including the Chief of Staff. Summer interns will have time with Council Member Kallos and take part in a program that includes tours, meeting with political experts, and weekend team building activities.

Community Board 11

Manhattan Community Board 11 represents the communities of East Harlem and Randall’s/Ward’s Islands. The Community Board’s role is to advocate for the neighborhoods and provide a mechanism for residents to engage with local government. Community Board 11 has an important role in initiating and reviewing planning, land use and zoning matters, the City budget, municipal service delivery and many other advocacy matters relating to the welfare of the East Harlem community.

East Harlem Community Health Assessment Summer Fieldwork Internship:

The Community Board seeking summer interns to redo the health services portion of its 2004 Planning Assessment.

Responsibilities:

  • Update the lists of available health services within the East Harlem community—including educational, cultural, social services, and public safety—and mapping the locations if able.
    • Survey community based organizations/agencies regarding services provided, number of persons served, demographics, etc.
    • Interview local residents regarding health services, community needs, etc.
    • Write a targeted report on a specific topic of relevance to the East Harlem community (domestic violence, obesity, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, etc.) that includes extensive research, community outreach, and recommendations.

Qualifications:

  • Experience conducting field research, site visits, evaluating programs, and determining recommendations.
    • Passionate and creative approach to community health.

Intern must complete 200 hours over the course of the summer

East Harlem Arts and Social Media Internship

The Community Board is seeking a creative, detail oriented and motivated undergraduate intern to conduct outreach for the community board with a focus on arts and culture. They want to highlight the uniqueness of their local arts community and heritage as well as connect more residents with the community board. This is an ideal internship for someone interested in marketing, public relations, social media, nonprofit work, arts/culture, and the neighborhood of East Harlem.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing and managing CB 11’s social media accounts: Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
    • Compiling events, information and interviews for monthly community announcements and quarterly newsletters.
    • Maintaining calendar, community events and organizations listings, and a rotating set of photographs for the website.
    • Researching, documenting, mapping, and interviewing artists of all sorts within the community, and developing methods to highlight the unique and vibrant artistic community of East Harlem.

Harlem Community Justice Center

Harlem Community Justice Center is a subset of The Center for Court Innovation. The Center for Court Innovation, a project of the Fund for the City of New York, is a non-profit organization that promotes new thinking about how to reduce crime and incarceration while strengthening public trust in justice. The Center creates operating projects, including the award-winning Red Hook Community Justice Center and Midtown Community Court that have been documented to improve public safety and reduce the use of jail and prison. Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research on topics of justice reform and provides consulting services to criminal justice innovators.

Parent Pledge Outreach Intern

The Harlem Community Justice Center seeks a Parent Pledge Outreach Intern. Reporting to the Parent Pledge Project Coordinator, the Parent Pledge Outreach Intern will help promote the Parent Pledge Mediation Program, an innovative program that provides free, professional mediation services for low-income parents living in Manhattan or Brooklyn who are seeking a faster, non-adversarial alternative to court as they work out co-parenting and child support agreements. The process is designed to promote the payment of child support by non-custodial parents and help both parents work together to improve outcomes for their child(ren).

Responsibilities:

  • Build relationships with community based organizations serving low-income families.
    • Help to coordinate the provision of social services as needed to families through the Justice Center’s in-house social work clinic and community partners.
    • Work with Parent Pledge Project Coordinator to deliver presentations to community boards, parents, community partners, city agencies, etc.
    • Assist in the development of outreach materials.
    • Assist with incoming calls and emails from prospective clients and referral organizations.
    • Conduct community outreach to generate and sustain community support for Parent Pledge in high poverty areas, including the neighborhoods of Upper Manhattan.

COMMUNITY AND SOCIAL WORK INTERNSHIPS

MAChO

Motivating Action through Community Health Outreach (MAChO) is a student-run volunteer program based in the Community Service Office of Weill Cornell Medical College. MAChO is a diverse group of volunteers with a variety of personal and professional backgrounds who share a central vision of empowering our youth through the promotion of healthy living. MAChO strives to promote healthy living through two initiatives: a Youth Wellness Program (YWP) and a Youth Leadership Program (YLP). YWP is a program for children ages 8-13 and has a focus on nutrition, physiology, fitness and personal development. YLP engages high school juniors and seniors and has a focus on wellness and social justice. MAChO’s teams work together to promote the message of healthy living through after-school programming and summer programs for elementary and middle school kids, a program for high school students to express their thoughts on wellness topics in their communities, family engagement and community based events.

P.S. 30M Community Learning School (CLS) is a part of the New York City Community Learning School Initiative (www.nyccls.org). As a CLS, P.S. 30M aims to provide services and programs that cater not merely to its students but to the greater East Harlem community. The school hosts an annual community resource fair, monthly family nights, offers parents one-on-one financial literacy counseling provided by Food Bank for NYC, and has partnered with local faith-based leaders to brainstorm various ways to assist the East Harlem community.

Movement for Justice in El Barrio (Movement)

Movement for Justice in El Barrio (Movement) is an immigrant-led community organization fighting for justice in East Harlem, New York. Movement was founded to fight against a voracious trend towards gentrification that is devouring low-income housing and displacing immigrant & low-income families from their homes. Through strategies such as protests, litigation, and media outreach, Movement has organized tenants to achieve thousands of repairs and has successfully challenged attempts by aggressive landlords and multi-national corporations to illegally evict them from their homes. Movement for Justice in El Barrio was named “Best Power to the People Movement in New York City” by the Village Voice.

Community Organizing Intern

Movement for Justice in El Barrio is offering this exciting opportunity to people committed to social justice and interested in doing community organizing. Interns’ activities will include doing outreach in the community, helping organize tenant associations and community forums and researching community issues.

High School Equivalency (HSE) Intern

STRIVE is seeking an intern to support High School Equivalency Math Instruction. Intern will report to the Coordinator of Youth Services

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate would be interested in teaching young adults and passionate about math. The intern will support the Department of Education Teacher by developing activities and tutoring youth to develop math skills as needed. The schedule for this position is flexible.

Reentry and Engagement Intern

The Reentry and Engagement Intern will be responsible for supporting the STRIVE For Success program staff to engage participants, support participants’ transition into the community, and engage participants’ families in the process of community re-integration. STRIVE For Success is a pre- and post-release program for incarcerated parents on Rikers Island Correctional Facility. Pre-release, participants engage in two months of workshops focused on job readiness, parenting, attitudinal change and transition planning. Participants meet with mentors on a bi-weekly basis; mentors are recruited from the alumni group of STRIVE’s CORE and Fatherhood program. Post-release, participants enroll in STRIVE’s CORE and/or Fatherhood program and engage in weekly group mentoring and continued case management services.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the development, planning, and organization of monthly family engagement activities for participants and their family
    • Accompany participants to various supportive service referral appointments
    • Provide outreach support to referral agencies in the community
    • Assist with the planning and organization of program-wide events
    • Conduct participant follow-up on a consistent basis
    • Provide support with data entry and client tracking

Environment Health and Family Asthma ProgramEnvironmental Worker (bilingual):

The Intern will work to improve housing conditions and reduce asthma triggers and symptoms. Duties include making environmental assessment, teaching families, and doing interventions. Interns must work at least 4 hours two days a week (6 month commitment minimum).

Candidate must be interested in community health issues, be able to work with community people, and make home visits. Volunteer must be bilingual (English/Spanish)

Advocacy and Food Program Food Pantry Helper

Interns will help stock and pre-pack foods for the food pantry, accompany clients and help them select their food. Volunteers especially needed Fridays, 1-4pm; but hours are flexible and can be arranged any time Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm

Bilingual Spanish/English or Mandarin/English is very helpful, but not required.

Advocacy and Food Pantry Program Advocate

Volunteers will attend to clients one at a time by appointment, conducting intakes, assessing the client’s needs, distributing food from the food pantry and making referrals for necessary services.

Assisting clients to select food from the food pantry; educating clients regarding government benefits and entitlements; making referrals for child care, counseling, legal assistance, job training, help with housing or immigrations; making referrals to other LSA programs, as needed.

Greenhope

Greenhope Services for Women, Inc. was established in 1975 in a convent that was transformed into a comprehensive residential treatment program for formerly incarcerated women. Over the years, it has developed formal relationships with the criminal justice system and has expanded its work to include services for women on parole and those referred by the courts as an alternative to incarceration (ATI). Located in East Harlem, Greenhope’s commitment to providing quality services to predominantly poor African American and Latina ex-offenders has made it a leader in working with women to address the problems that lead to a life of drugs and crime. It is one of the few woman-centered facilities operating in New York State, which serves both parolees and ATI clients.

Data Analyst

Reporting to the Grants & Contracts manager, this person will provide professional skills necessary for all phases of data collection, entry, processing and analysis for research projects, including the application of standard, descriptive, and inferential statistical methods for conducting analysis to assist with ensuring client and program compliance.

Responsibilities:

  • Heavy data entry of client intake, discharge, follow-up and other tracking data.
    • Create and maintain client database of all program components using Microsoft Excel, Access database program. Ensure the integrity of data, possibly including data extraction, processing, storage, manipulation, and analysis.

SCAN New York is and East Harlem community based Youth Service provider. Scan sponsors eight East Harlem community centers, five situated in NYCHA housing developments (Wagner, Johnson, East River, Martin Luther King Towers and Jackie Robinson Houses); two Beacons (La Isla and El Faro Beacons) located in Middle Schools; with one additional site. SCAN LaGuardia Memorial House (307 East 116th Street). SCAN services approximately 1500 After School young people on a daily basis, at eight sites. SCAN servicse an additional 750 teens on weekday evenings. Saturday programming involves approximately 15000 latency aged youth and teens. SCAN’s After School Programs emphasize Literacy, Recreation, and Creative Arts. Evening Teen activities include Creative Arts and much more

Requirements:

  • Intern must have capacity to teach young people and a major in a relevant field.

The candidate must contribute a minimum of one time slot per week (e.g. After School — 3pm to 6pm, one weekday; Evening — 6pm to 9pm, one evening). SCAN would prefer each intern to contribute two or more time slots per week for a minimum of one full semester (a full academic year commitment is also welcome).

STRIVE is a national non-profit workforce development organization whose mission is to secure long-term employment for the hard-to-employ populations of New York’s inner-city communities, to assist others in adopting the STRIVE model, and to encourage effective employment policies and practice nationwide. Since 1984, STRIVE has been serving those with multiple barriers to employment, many of the people STRIVE helps have served time in jail, received welfare or were formerly homeless. STRIVE is seeking an intern to support High School Equivalency Math Instruction. Intern will report to the Coordinator of Youth Services. The ideal candidate would be interested in teaching young adults and passionate about math.

Responsibilities:

  • The intern will support the Department of Education Teacher by developing activities and tutoring youth to develop math skills as needed. The schedule is flexible.

 

Little Sisters of the Assumption (LSA)

The Little Sisters of the Assumption Family Health Service (LSA), Inc. a nonprofit, neighborhood-based organization founded in 1958, works with the people of East Harlem to address the physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual dimensions of family health. Its home-based and center-based programs are designed to empower those who are most vulnerable and who have least access to the basic necessities of life, in the conviction that the entire community grows when individuals and families are affirmed in their own dignity.

Socialization Assistant

  • Assist with a group of children from babies–3 years of age and their mothers in our Socialization Program. Work under the direction of the Socialization program director and with the team to carry out curriculum that meets the children’s individual needs.
  • Flexibility and emotional stability are necessary to work with children and families in stressful situations, as well as having a sense of fun and enjoyment in work. Being Bilingual is helpful, but not necessary.
  • Hours needed: at least two sessions per week of the following: Monday through Friday, 9:30-11:30am, 12:30-2:30pm, and 3-5:00pm.

 

Replications, Inc.

Replications, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing outstanding educational opportunities for underserved children, students to work as tutors and teaching assistants in an East Harlem middle school during its after-school program. Subjects include math, English, social studies, and science.

  • Responsibilities will include tutoring, teaching small groups, and assisting teachers in their planning.
  • No previous experience necessary. Must be ready to work seriously and with dedication.

MAChO

Motivating Action through Community Health Outreach (MAChO) is a student-run volunteer program based in the Community Service Office of Weill Cornell Medical College. MAChO is a diverse group of volunteers with a variety of personal and professional backgrounds who share a central vision of empowering our youth through the promotion of healthy living. MAChO strives to promote healthy living through two initiatives: a Youth Wellness Program (YWP) and a Youth Leadership Program (YLP). YWP is a program for children ages 8-13 and has a focus on nutrition, physiology, fitness and personal development. YLP engages high school juniors and seniors and has a focus on wellness and social justice. MAChO’s teams work together to promote the message of healthy living through after-school programming and summer programs for elementary and middle school kids, a program for high school students to express their thoughts on wellness topics in their communities, family engagement and community based events.

Responsibilities:

  • Correspond with family members of participants- call them prior to the start of each semester to remind them of the start date & time, answer questions
    • Represent the families as their liaison at MAChO Executive Board meetings
    • Lead the organization of weekend parent sessions
    • Attend MAChO sessions and interact with parent/children & assist in lessons

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai seeks a Community Engagement/Public Health Intern who will be responsible for providing day-to-day support to the Project Director and Project Coordinator in carrying out the assigned activities and duties required under the Borough Lead Organization contract, which include but are not limited to those detailed below. This is an excellent learning opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning more about community-based public health initiatives and developing communications/engagement skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Grow and support a Borough-level coalition.
    • Participate in routine calls with Partnership staff, Coordinating Committee meetings, and all mandatory Partnership trainings and meetings.
    • Prepare and submit all required monthly and quarterly reports, vouchers and documentation.
    • Coordinating with additional sectors and constituencies within the borough.
    • Meet with key stakeholders (non-traditional partners, NYC officials) to provide education and advocacy on Partnership strategic objectives.
    • Collaborate with partners to broaden the reach and scope of work across the four priority areas.
    • Make presentations to community boards about the organization’s work with the Partnership and the defined strategic objectives. Contribute to and participate in assessments of public health issues and exploration of strategies to address these issues, as directed by Partnership staff.

The Intern will work to improve housing conditions and reduce asthma triggers and           symptoms. Duties include making environmental assessment, teaching families, and doing interventions. Candidate must be interested in community health issues, be able to work with community people, and make home visits. Volunteer must be bilingual (English/Spanish)

Interns must work at least 4 hours two days a week (6 month commitment minimum).

The Community Board’s role is to advocate for the neighborhoods and provide a mechanism for residents to engage with local government. Community Board 11 has an important role in initiating and reviewing planning, land use and zoning matters, the City budget, municipal service delivery and many other advocacy matters relating to the welfare of the East Harlem community.

East Harlem Community Health Assessment – Summer Fieldwork Internship

The Community Board seeking summer interns to redo the health services portion of its 2004 Planning Assessment.

Responsibilities:

  • Update the lists of available health services within the East Harlem community—including educational, cultural, social services, and public safety—and mapping the locations if able.
    • Survey community based organizations/agencies regarding services provided, number of persons served, demographics, etc.
    • Interview local residents regarding health services, community needs, etc.
    • Write a targeted report on a specific topic of relevance to the East Harlem community (domestic violence, obesity, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, etc.) that includes extensive research, community outreach, and recommendations.

Qualifications:

  • Experience conducting field research, site visits, evaluating programs, and determining recommendations.
    • Passionate and creative approach to community health.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Ability to be work independently and be flexible.
    • Interest in or familiarity with the East Harlem community.
    • GIS experience.

The Community Board wants to highlight the uniqueness of its local arts community and heritage as well as connect more residents with it. This is an ideal internship for someone interested in marketing, public relations, social media, nonprofit work, arts/culture, and the neighborhood of East Harlem.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing and managing CB 11’s social media accounts: Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
    • Compiling events, information and interviews for monthly community announcements and quarterly newsletters.
    • Maintaining calendar, community events and organizations listings, and a rotating set of photographs for the website.
    • Researching, documenting, mapping, and interviewing artists of all sorts within the community, and developing methods to highlight the unique and vibrant artistic community of East Harlem.

After Dark CATV PRO: La Fortaleza

AfterDark CATV PRO is a media arts organizations working with neighborhood groups and individuals on an economic development project utilizing arts & culture as engines for development and maintenance of local ethnic flavor. La Fortaleza is comprised of a group of vested community stakeholders. They include: The Educational Pledge, AfterDark CATV PRO, the East Harlem Business Capital Corp, Angel Santos Group, and individuals of the community. The vision of La Fortaleza is to radically change El Barrio (East Harlem) and upgrade the quality of life and well-being of its residents.

La Fortaleza Internship:

Specific positions may include clerical, field research & marketing, urban planners, and other creative positions. Tasks present themselves with the varying needs of different events

Qualifications:

  • Business administration and accounting students offer infrastructural support, management, and clerical skills
  • Marketing and advertising experience would allow the pragmatic insight that could be useful in promotion & publicity efforts and with that the creative arts skills of designing logos, web sites, posters & invitations. Information technology students add the element of incorporating the cyber world.
  • Sociology students can help identify and target audiences and help design studies.
  • Being bilingual or students who are studying languages will possess communication skills that will help to reach immigrant populations and serve as translators and voice actors.
  • Media production and theater are helpful in creating media messages and recordings of events that will give life to projects beyond the date of the event.
