Digital Journalism Skills Intensive For U.S. and International Students

JULY 6 – JULY 17

This two-week intensive course in advanced digital journalism will provide students with cutting edge skills – including social media and crowdsourcing reporting, smartphone reporting, audio and video storytelling, and photography for the web – all while reporting in New York City for a major multimedia class project.

Reporting and Writing Bootcamp for U.S. and International Students

JULY 6 – JULY 17

A two-week hands-on workshop on reporting and writing about one of the world’s most complex and fascinating cities: New York. With the professional guidance and editing of our faculty, participants will explore the city’s diverse neighborhoods. They’ll interview officials and decision makers, focus on the city’s amazing patchwork of cultural influences and practitioners, and delve into its vibrant, immigrant-driven economy.

Digital Skills Intensive for Journalism Teachers and Advisers

JULY 6 – JULY 17

This two-week course is designed to provide high school journalism teachers with new tools for updating their student publications. Teachers will learn how to journalistically harness students’ smartphone, video and social media abilities to create or bolster online news products. The class will produce a digital project showcasing the skills taught.

Crash Course in American Business and Economics Reporting

JULY 20 – JULY 31

This two-week session provides an intensive course in American-style economic and business reporting. Students will examine the economies of America, Europe and key emerging countries, and learn about covering the stock market and companies. Participants will write stories and visit Bloomberg, CNNMoney and the New York Federal Reserve Bank.

Documentary Storytelling Workshop for U.S. and International Students

JULY 20 – JULY 31

This two-week class will focus on the use of the narrative three-act storytelling technique while exploring different styles, such as cinema verite, investigative and hybrid genres. Students are encouraged to bring an idea for a long-form piece – or even bring in footage, assemblies or rough cuts for review.

Photojournalism Workshop for U.S. and International Students

JULY 20 – JULY 31

This two-week, hands-on photo course is built around several shooting assignments in New York City and group critiques. Course material will progress from basic camera operation to compositional instruction and in-the-field tips. We’ll also look at the role of professional photojournalism in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape.

Crash Course in Entertainment & Culture Reporting for U.S. and International Students

JULY 20 – JULY 31

This two-week session provides an intensive course in American-style reporting on arts, culture and entertainment. Students will be introduced to the basics of covering, art, culture, and entertainment stories, and receive assignments on relevant topics. We’ll visit major local museums, Broadway theaters and media production companies.

Conflict Reporting Workshop for U.S. and International Students

JULY 20 – JULY 31

Journalists embrace conflict because conflict creates worldwide news: military conflict, but also conflict involving race, politics, religion, gender. This two-week class scrutinizes coverage of conflicts past and present, explores how to best cover such issues today, and humps downrange to a U.S. military installation to meet with warfighters with opinions about journalistic coverage.
