About
the Project
Maps are tools for understanding the world from different
points of view - political, cultural, personal, and historical.
Maps hold the power to shape the truth about the world and
mapmakers shape the future. The NYSoundmap is a container
- a concept or idea to hold many types of processes and projects.
The project reaches across the city's geographic, economic,
educational, cultural and racial divides. It is at once a
historical record and a subjective representation of the city.
It is what each user wishes it to be and it is ever growing,
ever changing and totally interactive.

Participants
The lead artists of the NYSoundmap project are all members
of The New York Society for Acoustic Ecology (NYSAE). We share
a common fascination with sound and its connection to place
and space. Our distinct creative practices have contemplated
and reconfigured our environment and our roles within it.
These practices form the basis of our collective voice in
the NYsoundmap project. <more> |

Title: Atmospherics/Weather Works (2004, Andrea Polli)
Soundscapes featured on the Whitney Museum’s Artport
May, 2004 “Atmospherics/Weather
Works is a classic example of the use of data-sets to
generate / create new media art. Re-creating two historic
New York / Long Island storms, the first in 1979 the
second in 1991, from available data and miniaturizing
them...The work aims to create a sound-space allowing
users to ‘gain a deeper understanding of some
of the more unpredictable complex rhythms and melodies
of nature’ with none of the potential risks.”

Title: Retina Burn (2004, Andrea Polli) 27 minute composition.
"In Retina Burn, soundwaves generated by the sun
are manipulated by movements of the performer's eye,
thereby allowing the listener to audibly 'view' the
sun without the usual risk of damaged vision. The composition's
low hums and fluttering sine waves combine with percussive
blinks and squints to gradually move through a series
of sonic dilations; a feast for the ears prepared by
the eye."
