The James Aronson Awards for Social Justice Journalism at Hunter College has selected Wendi C. Thomas, an investigative journalist and founder of the Memphis-based nonprofit newsroom MLK50: Justice Through Journalism<\/a>, as the recipient of the 2026 James Aronson Outstanding Journalist Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the November 11 ceremony, Thomas will discuss the current state of journalism and how her work addresses the challenges and possibilities facing the field today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas founded MLK50 in 2017 as a one-year project leading up to the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s assassination. Nearly a decade later, MLK50 has grown into an award-winning newsroom dedicated to reporting on the systems and policies that perpetuate poverty and inequality in Memphis, one of America\u2019s poorest large cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas\u2019 2019 series, \u201cProfiting from the Poor<\/a>,\u201d produced in partnership with ProPublica, uncovered how Memphis\u2019 largest nonprofit health care system aggressively sued low-income patients over unpaid medical bills. The reporting prompted the hospital system to erase nearly $12 million in patient debt and won several awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More recently, Thomas has shed light on immigration enforcement, policing and the technology industry\u2019s influence in Memphis. Her 2025 investigation, \u201cInside the Memphis Chamber of Commerce\u2019s Push for Elon Musk\u2019s xAI Data Center<\/a>,\u201d produced in collaboration with ProPublica, exposed how the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce went to extraordinary lengths to promote Musk\u2019s xAI supercomputing facility. As communities around the United States grapple with the construction of data centers in their own backyards, Thomas\u2019 reporting raises important questions about corporate influence, environmental justice and the health risks facing predominantly Black communities already burdened by industrial pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas\u2019 investigative reporting bears witness to the lived experiences of marginalized communities while holding powerful institutions accountable. Her commitment to exposing systemic injustice and using journalism to effect meaningful change embodies the mission of the Aronson Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to honoring established journalists, the James Aronson Awards celebrates the next generation of journalists committed to truth, accountability and social change. This year, we recognize Andrew Balaban with the Undergraduate Student Award for Outstanding Social Justice Journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balaban tackled a complex and longstanding issue: why New York City\u2019s public housing has remained in disrepair despite decades of efforts to fix its problems. He dug into the data, interviewed experts and, most importantly, spent time with public housing residents, who understand these challenges firsthand. The result is a nuanced, sophisticated work of journalism that goes beyond simply assigning blame and reveals the complexities of the crisis and the costs of failing to confront it head on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
