{"id":6554,"date":"2023-10-25T13:26:50","date_gmt":"2023-10-25T17:26:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fm.hunter.cuny.edu\/journalism\/?p=6554"},"modified":"2023-10-27T10:18:10","modified_gmt":"2023-10-27T14:18:10","slug":"faculty-spotlight-monica-malpass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fm.hunter.cuny.edu\/journalism\/index.php\/2023\/10\/25\/faculty-spotlight-monica-malpass\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty Spotlight: Monica Malpass"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fm.hunter.cuny.edu\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nasdaq.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6582\" width=\"372\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fm.hunter.cuny.edu\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nasdaq.png 333w, https:\/\/fm.hunter.cuny.edu\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nasdaq-300x236.png 300w, https:\/\/fm.hunter.cuny.edu\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nasdaq-318x250.png 318w, https:\/\/fm.hunter.cuny.edu\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nasdaq-139x109.png 139w, https:\/\/fm.hunter.cuny.edu\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nasdaq-292x230.png 292w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Professor Monica Malpass makes her debut this fall as an adjunct professor in the journalism program at Hunter, bringing her many years of expertise to Reporting and Writing 101, \u201ca class not only designated for journalism students but an elective for many others,\u201d said Malpass.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malpass began her career as a reporter for the student-run newspaper at the University of North Carolina, <em>The Daily Tarheel<\/em>, and after graduating went to WPVI in Philadelphia, where she worked for 31 years and co-anchored the morning, noon and 5 p.m. news, and also hosted the station\u2019s political talk show, <em>Inside Story<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malpass earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Arts in political science from Villanova University. She has also received two honorary doctorates, from Neuman College and Peirce College, and was a Rotary International Scholar, among many other honors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Journalism was not always on her mind. During spring break of her sophomore year of college, Malpass\u2019s older brother, in a half-joking and half-serious way, said: \u201cYou know you talk a lot, why don\u2019t you get into TV or something and get them to pay you?\u201d She declared journalism as her major and volunteered for the school\u2019s newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After many volunteering positions, not-so-well-paid internships, and rejection letters, she obtained a job as a part-time weekend reporter thanks to her ability to produce an audition tape on the spot, even if it was a bad story. She doesn\u2019t take \u201cno\u201d as a definite, more like a <em>maybe<\/em> or a <em>down the road<\/em>. \u201cI really want my students to learn how to hang in there in the face of negativity,\u201d said Malpass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malpass transitioned to freelancing four years ago. She always wanted to live in New York City.
