Neighborhood News students recently learned how to be safe online in their roles as journalists, thanks to a recent virtual class visit from representatives from the Committee to Protect Journalists, or CPJ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staffers Lucy Westcott and Avi Asher Shapiro joined the newsroom of Professor Katina Paron\u2019s MEDPL 377 Neighborhood News class to talk about technology safety and online harassment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJournalist safety wasn\u2019t something I\u2019d even considered until I started reporting on it myself,\u201d said Westcott, who works with the Emergency Team at CPJ that is providing resources<\/a> to journalists on how to safely report the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs I got later into my career,\u201d said Westcott, “I realized \u2018Oh, I had gotten online harassment in response to things I\u2019d written about.\u2019 I\u2019d never had to deal with that before, and I didn\u2019t know how to deal with it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there was one thing I wish I had done from the very beginning of my journalism career \u2014 making my personal and private social media accounts separate.<\/p>\u2014Lucy Westcott, Committee to Protect Journalists<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As an advocacy and research organization, CPJ promotes press freedom around the world and helps journalists in need. One of the organization’s more critical contributions is a census that comes out every year that keeps track of the killing<\/a> and imprisonment of journalists in relation to their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year 250 journalists were put in jail for their work and 25 journalists were killed<\/a>. So far in 2020, the CPJ has tracked 7 journalists<\/a> who died while on assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the class discussion shifted to places that could require more safety measures while reporting, such as Syria or Mexico, Paron prompted the class to think about what it would mean if some countries were successful in scaring journalists into silence. \u201cThink about all of those stories and situations that aren\u2019t getting light shed on them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shapiro works as CPJ\u2019s self described \u201cin-house\u201d reporter, who covers press freedom as a beat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have developed expertise in press freedom as a subject area for coverage, and that\u2019s something that CPJ does really, really well,\u201d he said. A recent article by Shapiro covered how governments across the world are considering cellphone surveillance<\/a> as a way to help contain the novel coronavirus, and what that means for journalists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While contagion coverage creates new opportunities for young journalists to collect clips, students should consider protecting themselves by removing their personal information from the internet. That\u2019s something Westcott said she wished she learned earlier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
