Photo: Kalli Siringas&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Food writing is not just listicles of the best New York pizza and trending food on Instagram.&nbsp; It\u2019s also the social justice aspect of food journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was a key message for Hunter Journalism Intern Kalli Siringas, who attended a Jan. 29 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cunyurbanfoodpolicy.org\/events\/2019\/12\/20\/urban-food-policy-forum-muckraking-investigative-impact-and-local-journalism-new-directions-for-media-reporting-on-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Urban Food Policy Forum<\/a> on new directions in media reporting on food, along with food journalists and activists, at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was nice to be surrounded by professionals who are working hard to change the landscape of food journalism as we know it,&#8221; said Siringas. &#8220;There are deeper stories to tell about the way we engage with food \u2014 and it\u2019s exciting to learn more about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe food system reporting that I do is actually health journalism,\u201d said freelance journalist <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lisaelaineheld.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lisa Elaine Held<\/a>, among the panelists who described the role of journalism in changing the food landscape.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Held also discussed the importance of shifting away from simpler food-related topics like nutrition or what trending supplement to take. \u201cWhat isn\u2019t simple is how food is produced and the forces that actually dictate what ends up on people&#8217;s plates,\u201d she explained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panelists shared personal writing and reporting experiences, as well as ideas for the future of food writing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8216;A lot of food that is sold is not food, but closer to poison. And that\u2019s not a food issue, but a social justice issue.&#8217;<\/p><cite>\u2014 Food journalist and author Mark Bittman<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Kysha Jones, the food editor for the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/amsterdamnews.com\/news\/arts-entertainment\/food\/\" target=\"_blank\">Amsterdam News<\/a>, spoke to her experiences growing up in Harlem and wishing for a way to showcase food within her community for those interested in exploring the food landscape outside of what was readily available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jones added that she has found a way to do just that through her writing, as well as her role as an associate producer of Harlem\u2019s premier food festival, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/harlemeatup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harlem EatUp!<\/a>.&nbsp; \u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity to really highlight local food makers and local artisans and show what they do,\u201d she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One commonality among food journalists on the panel was that, in many ways, food is beside the point. Joe Fasseler, the deputy editor of The New Food Economy (now <a href=\"https:\/\/thecounter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">The Counter<\/a>), pointed out that \u201cfood is our lens\u201d to find the larger story, such as how our lives are affected by large agribusiness, what we consume and how we utilize it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food journalist and author Mark Bittman, a former columnist for The New York Times who now edits <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/heated.medium.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heated<\/a>, agreed, \u201cA lot of food that is sold is not food, but closer to poison.
