Attendance, travel and accommodations are provided by NLGJA.<br \/>\nContributors<br \/>\nMore info here: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlgja.org\/resources\/longcope\/\">http:\/\/www.nlgja.org\/resources\/longcope\/<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Deadline<\/h4>\n<p>May 31<\/p>\n<h4>Background<\/h4>\n<p>Journalist Kay Longcope was co-founder of the statewide LGBTQ newsweekly, The Texas Triangle, and is generally regarded as the first out reporter at the Boston Globe newspaper. The pioneering Longcope started writing for the Globe in 1970 and was there for more than twenty years, including tenure as the paper\u2019s religion editor. She died of pancreatic cancer on March 28, 2007.<br \/>\nThe Kay Longcope Scholarship Award was established in 2008 through a gift from Longcope\u2019s estate and with the guidance of Longcope\u2019s partner Barbara Wohlgemuth. NLGJA is pleased to be home to this unique scholarship opportunity which furthers the vision of founder Leroy F. Aarons and moves forward his belief in the critical role diversity plays in the education of the next generation of newsroom leaders.<\/p>\n<h4>Criteria<\/h4>\n<p>Applicants must be an LGBTQ individual of color planning to pursue a career in journalism and be able to demonstrate their passion and commitment to the profession. Selection will be based on journalistic and scholastic ability. Applicants also must demonstrate an awareness of the issues facing the LGBTQ community and the importance of fair and accurate news coverage.<br \/>\nFor undergraduates, a declared major in journalism and communications is desirable but not required. Non-journalism majors may demonstrate their commitment to a journalism career through work samples, internships and work on a school newspaper, online news service or broadcast affiliate.<\/p>\n<h4>Who Can Apply<\/h4>\n<p>Current or incoming undergrad students enrolled in a U.S. community college or four-year university. Proof of acceptance or current enrollment required.<\/p>\n<h4>How to Apply<\/h4>\n<p>A complete application package should be submitted electronically. Incomplete applications will not be considered.<br \/>\nApplication packages should include:<br \/>\nApplication.<br \/>\nOne-page r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<br \/>\nFive work samples as described under work samples.<br \/>\nProof of attendance: a letter of acceptance or a letter of enrollment from a U.S. community college or four-year university (contact sachelle@nlgja.org for exceptions). Scanned copies accepted.<br \/>\nWrite and publish a news story to tumbler of words and multimedia.<\/p>\n<p>Stories can be pitched or chosen from among these topics:<br \/>\nProfile a senior LGBT activist in your community. Use text, video, audio, stills, and\/or infographics to show this person\u2019s story and role in the community.<br \/>\nAddress a legislative initiative in your community that impacts the LGBT population. Use text, video, audio, stills, and\/or infographics to show the impact.<br \/>\nCover an LGBT event in your community. Use text, video, audio, stills, and\/or infographics to cover different aspects of the event.<br \/>\nHave a great idea that\u2019s not mentioned here?
