PHOTO: Kalli Siringas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A Mike Wallace interview was like \u201cstepping into an arena.\u201d That\u2019s how filmmaker Avi Belkin described the hardball journalistic technique of the legendary \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/60-minutes\/about-us\/\">60 Minutes<\/a>\u201d newsman, who is the subject of Belkin\u2019s new documentary chronicling Wallace\u2019s trailblazing investigative work at the powerhouse CBS News program.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm7537549\/\">Belkin<\/a> made the remarks before some four dozen Hunter College students, faculty and staff at the college\u2019s Lang Auditorium following a Nov. 6 screening of his 90-minute film, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mikewallaceishere.com\/\">Mike Wallace Is Here<\/a>.\u201d&nbsp; [<a href=\"https:\/\/fm.hunter.cuny.edu\/journalism\/index.php\/2019\/11\/08\/cbs-news-icon-a-focus-of-screening-panel\/#video\">View video of the full 30-minute panel below<\/a>.]<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joining Belkin was Wallace\u2019s long-time \u201c60 Minutes\u201d producer, Bob Anderson, who lauded the documentary as a \u201cbrilliant movie that absolutely captured Mike. \u2026 He was a performer and charmer even when asking annoying, abusive, eviscerating questions.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cInterviews are a way to learn about others, but we also learn about ourselves.\u201d<br><\/p><cite><strong>\u2014 Avi Belkin, documentary filmmaker<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Hunter journalism\u2019s David Alm led the discussion with Anderson and Belkin after the screening, noting nostalgically how he grew up watching Wallace and \u201c60 Minutes\u201d each Sunday with his family, and crediting its influence at least to some degree for his choice to become a journalist.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/fm.hunter.cuny.edu\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wallace_Anderson-Mendez-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Hunter College journalism student Rich Mendez (at right) interviews CBS News veteran Bob Anderson, following a panel discussion on &quot;60 Minutes&quot; legend Mike Wallace. PHOTO: Kalli Siringas<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For his part, Belkin, who grew up in Israel and never actually saw \u201c60 Minutes\u201d until adulthood, the documentary was less an exercise in nostalgia and more an exploration of the iconic journalist\u2019s \u201corigin story.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belkin saw Wallace\u2019s confident, sometimes abrasive, interviewing style as the core not just of his journalism, but of his character. \u201cInterviews are a way to learn about others, but we also learn about ourselves,\u201d said Belkin, adding: \u201cMike Wallace was not a reflective person. [But through interviews] he was trying to learn about himself.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anderson spoke to the relevance of Wallace\u2019s stubborn pursuit of truth. \u201cWhen truth can be dismissed as fake, it means real journalism from respectable outlets that deals in fact, not fake, is more important than ever.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<a id=\"video\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u201960 MINUTES\u2019 PRODUCER, FILMMAKER TO VISIT HUNTER FOR DOCUMENTARY SCREENING Q&amp;A\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CnEIha_5ncE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>View video of the full 30-minute panel above.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked in an interview after the panel about whether today\u2019s journalists were reluctant to adopt Wallace\u2019s tenacious interviewing techniques for fear of losing access to sources, Anderson acknowledged that \u201cMike realized that he\u2019d gotten to the point where he was becoming a parody of himself \u2026 And so he used his charm more than his schtick in his later years of interviewing. You can certainly ask tough questions, you go for the same truths and the same tough questions but you ask them in a different tone.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cReal journalism from respectable outlets that deals in fact, not fake, is more important than ever.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p><cite><strong>\u2014 Bob Anderson, veteran producer, \u201c60 Minutes\u201d<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Anderson also offered advice to prospective young reporters, especially in response to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/voices.aaja.org\/index\/2019\/8\/1\/how-americas-top-newsrooms-recruit-interns-from-a-small-circle-of-colleges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">report<\/a> that shows major newsrooms overwhelmingly favor student journalists from Ivy Leagues and top schools.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving that Ivy League label is a plus,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean you have to have it. That doesn\u2019t mean the world isn\u2019t full of wildly successful people that didn\u2019t go to the Ivy Leagues. And so I would totally ignore that bias and go in there and make yourself the best and make sure they know that you are.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added, \u201cWhat Dan Rather said to me 40 years ago was, \u2018Get experience.\u2019 Get experience in college. Get experience during your internship. Wow them with the fact that you have all sorts of experience.
