That\u2019s wrong,\u201d said Schneider, who explained that bias is a <em>pattern<\/em> of unfairness. \u201cOne biased news outlet does not mean all news media are biased.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also taught students about audience bias and the tendency to seek out information that confirms pre-existing views. \u201cPeople tend to distort or forget incoming information that disagrees with their point of view,\u201d Schneider said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schneider urged students to slow down when consuming news and get past any initial emotional reaction so that they can engage the critical thinking part of their brain and ask themselves three questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What do I know?<\/li><li>How do I know it?<\/li><li>What don\u2019t I know?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He also believes it\u2019s essential to break out of filter bubbles and consume news that challenges existing assumptions and beliefs.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schneider was a reporter and editor at Newsday for more than 35 years before he began his teaching career as the founding dean of the School of Journalism at Stony Brook University.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also helped develop a curriculum to teach news literacy that has been used to educate more than 17,000 undergraduates at dozens of U.S. universities and in 10 countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"more about Hunter's own news literacy program (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/fm.hunter.cuny.edu\/journalism\/index.php\/2019\/09\/26\/newsliteracymatters-com-launches\/\" target=\"_blank\">more about Hunter&#8217;s news literacy program<\/a> and its new <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"NewsLiteracyMatters.com (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/newsliteracymatters.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">NewsLiteracyMatters.com<\/a> web site (<a href=\"https:\/\/newsliteracymatters.com\/subscribe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"subscribe here (opens in a new tab)\">subscribe here<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students in Professor Sissel McCarthy\u2019s MEDIA 211 class learned all about bias, fairness and balance in the news media from one of the nation\u2019s preeminent scholars on news literacy, during a guest lecture on Oct. 24.
