Put the ‘Juice’ In, Says Editor

Students in Prof. Pam Frederick’s Neighborhood News class — which produces a website for Hunter students called the Athenian — picked the brain of former GQ editor and freelance reporter Devin Gordon during a late October visit.

Gordon discussed breaking into the business with an internship, prepping for interviews and as he put it, “expanding your storytelling palette” with detail, and by finding more ways to write about the source’s environment.

He also stressed the importance of knowing your audience and finding a way to engage them in every paragraph. The goal is to make your story different and original.

“I’ve got to put juice in every sentence,” said Gordon, who recently wrote about the Mets announcers for The New York Times and James Harden for GQ.
