Investigative Reporters & Editors Fellowships

Conference fellowships and scholarships

IRE makes available certain fellowships and scholarships to allow students the opportunity to attend training events they would not otherwise be able to attend. Fellowships typically include a one-year IRE membership, conference or seminar registration fees, and reimbursement for hotel and travel expenses. IRE’s three-day conferences allow students to network with reporters and attend seminars for professional development.

Jennifer Leonard Scholarship

About the award: Send women of modest means who are college students studying journalism or professional journalists with three or fewer years of working experience to IRE’s conferences. The scholarships were established by IRE member David Cay Johnston to honor his wife, the president of the Rochester Area Community Foundation and a national leader in promoting ethical standards for endowments. Required application materials: Resume, letter of recommendation from a professor or supervisor, work samples, college transcripts (for college students only), and statement on career goals. If applicable, you may write a few sentences about financial need.
