Subversive Mini Art Festival

Subversive is a mini-art festival aimed at exploring the seemingly “benevolent” appeal of subcultures. The festival will point out the parallels that exist among the subcultures of Burlesque, the Ball Scene, Roller Derby, Lucha Libre, among others. The event will look at alternative conceptions of “masculinity” and “femininity” in spaces that redefine the role of gender and sexuality in a hetero-normative society. We will discover how these subcultures relate to each other and sociopolitical movements, and how they influence mainstream attitudes and culture.

Queen Beats

“QUEENS BEATS,” investigates how people are able to experience cultures, traditions, ethnic heritage, and the borough’s history through music, spoken word, local languages, and field sounds recorded in the neighborhoods along the 18 stops of the ‘International Express.’ QUEENS BEATS featured the interactive projects URBIS18 (a touch-screen interactive sound map), and IRTag (an interactive installation using barcode scanning technology). The Gentrification of Brooklyn: The Pink Elephant Speaks

This reception will include a public art performance, a musical set by Brooklyn-based author and DJ, Rich Burroughs, the opportunity to meet the featured artists and a presentation by the exhibition’s curator Dexter Wimberly. Free to the public.
