Sarah’s showing a large installation of her project Locations & Dislocation, which takes a poetic look at why people move through gentrifying areas.

How is gentrification affecting other communities in New York City? What are the implications for the future? This panel discussion will be moderated by Laurie Cumbo, Founder & Executive Director of MoCADA and will include panelists: Shantrelle P. Lewis: Director of Programs and Exhibitions at The Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute, Bob Lee: Director of the Asian American Arts Centre, Diane Fraher: Founder and Executive Director Amerinda, Inc. American Indian Artists, and Michael Unthank: Executive Director, Harlem Arts Alliance.

Subversive Mini Art Festival

Subversive is a mini-art festival aimed at exploring the seemingly “benevolent” appeal of subcultures. The festival will point out the parallels that exist among the subcultures of Burlesque, the Ball Scene, Roller Derby, Lucha Libre, among others. The event will look at alternative conceptions of “masculinity” and “femininity” in spaces that redefine the role of gender and sexuality in a hetero-normative society. We will discover how these subcultures relate to each other and sociopolitical movements, and how they influence mainstream attitudes and culture.

“QUEENS BEATS,” investigates how people are able to experience cultures, traditions, ethnic heritage, and the borough’s history through music, spoken word, local languages, and field sounds recorded in the neighborhoods along the 18 stops of the ‘International Express.’ QUEENS BEATS featured the interactive projects URBIS18 (a touch-screen interactive sound map), and IRTag (an interactive installation using barcode scanning technology).
