An Evening with Dan Geva

A screening of Description of a Memory (80 min., 2006) and Selections from Noise and Think Popcorn. Followed by a discussion with Dan and Professor Garnet Butchart of Duquesne University.
Dan Geva is a documentary film maker and a theorist not only of the documentary per se, but of the maker, the documentarist. Since he graduated from Sam Spiegel Film Institute with honors in 1994 he has produced, with his wife and partner Noit, over 25 full length documentaries. He will be screening from his recent trilogy “Three Love Poems to Documentary-ness.” including all of Description of a Memory, a work that takes as its beginning an early unreleased film about Israel by Chris Marker. Dan’s work is extraordinary both aesthetically and intellectually. In addition to his films, Dan will offer insights about what it means to be a maker from his current Ph.D. Thesis project, “The Extended Sign of the Documentarist.”
The screening will be followed by a discussion led (via skype) by interlocutor Duquesne professor Garnet Butchart. Garnet’s cultural studies work focuses on the ethics and truth claims of the documentary form.
